Jessen’s approach to solo improvisation regularly shifts and evolves over time, but often includes an exploration of sound worlds that can evoke a visceral and emotional response. In performance, she creates musical environments that she set into motion and allows for natural occurrences to happen – whether they be delicate and fragile, or raw and aggressive. Many of the sound worlds stem from an extensive personal catalog of extended techniques and an avant-garde musical language that Jessen has developed over the years.

Praised for her diverse talents, Oberlin-based bassoonist Dana Jessen is active as a soloist, improviser, chamber musician, and new music specialist. Dana is the co-founder of Splinter Reeds, an Oakland-based reed quintet, and has performed with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Alarm Will Sound, Amsterdam’s DOEK Collective, and Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra, among others. Dana’s debut solo album, Carve, was released through Innova Recordings in 2017 and features four newly commissioned works for bassoon and electronics alongside solo acoustic improvisations. The album has received celebrated reviews and mentions from the Chicago Reader, All About Jazz, and ATTN:Magazine, among others. Additional recordings can be heard on Cantaloupe Records, New Focus, Innova Recordings, Ravello, RIOJA, Oberlin Music, Evil Rabbit and New World Records. Dana is currently based in Oberlin, Ohio, where she serves as Associate Professor of Contemporary Music and Improvisation at the Oberlin Conservatory as well as the Director of Professional Development.

Kyle’s current project is inspired by the early sounds of Amy Winehouse, Sarah Vaughn, and Aretha Franklin. Driven by the weaving of story through song, this works tells truths of the heart : the joys and misfortunes of love. He has chosen to consort with storytelling musicians, featuring collaborator Pete Saudek (Guitar). Together they create haunting melodies, deep expressions of truth, and an innovative synthesis of sound.

Kyle Kidd is a vocalist, activist, and visionary of social transformation. He creates Black Art, pulling from the many different avenues of black music and culture, vocally fusing classical, jazz, blues, gospel, funk and soul. He is currently performing throughout the country with artists such as Mourning a BLKstar, Richard Kennedy, and Buck McDaniels, whom he has worked with through Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project in the past. In his solo division, Kyle composes original music and curates multi-sensory experiences that incorporate stylized video, music, and fashion. He intends for his art, in all its forms, to be a tribal legacy centered on representation, raw expression, and true freedom for each of us.

Paul Saudek will be joining Kidd on guitar.
