Jaribu Shahid (Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago)

The Syndicate for the New Arts and New Ghosts presents Jaribu Shahid with Dana Jessen and Josh Harlow. This newly formed trio represents 3 generations of experimental improvised music. Jaribu Shahid, based out of Detroit, MI, was mentored by Faruq Z. Bey and became an integral part of the mid-70's sci-fi band Griot Galaxy. He then moved to Philadelphia and joined the ranks of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Around 1979, Shahid began working with Roscoe Mitchell from the Art Ensemble of Chicago and began his career-long involvement with the Sound and Space Ensemble. In recent years, Shahid has been the bassist for multiple groups formed by David Murray and is the bassist for the current incarnation of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Dana Jessen, based of Oberlin, OH, is a bassoonist, improvisor, and educator. She has played and recorded with Anthony Braxton, the Amsterdam Contemporary Ensemble, and Bang on a Can founder Michael Gordon, among others.

Josh Harlow, based out of Ypsilanti, MI, is a pianist and improvisor. After graduating from Oberlin Conservatory, Harlow has cultivated a rich performance career in the Detroit area and has collaborated with Wadada Leo Smith, Michael Formanek, Luciano Chessa, and Nicole Mitchell.

Also featured on the program is a newly formed violin, drum, and saxophone trio comprised of Bob Bucko Jr., Alex Cunningham, and Alexander Adams.
